The Worm Bench is our newest cedar outdoor worm farm that also doubles up as a place to sit. The rot resistant, untreated cedar will ensure a long lifespan without any toxic chemicals added to the worm compost. The bench can accept 15 to 45 kg per week of kitchen scraps. Vermicomposting does not produce smells or flies so sitting on the bench is not an unpleasant experience at all.

Dimensions: 6 feet long, 18 inches wide, and 18 inches tall

The bench is designed keeping in mind the growing importance of Green Infrastructure in communities to help improve soil quality and recycle food waste. Composting not only reduces landfill methane emissions, but it also does amazing things to soil like improve water retention, increase plant growth, improve biodiversity and capture atmospheric carbon. Gardeners call it black gold, and we say it is a magic fertilizer.

The bench must be placed on a flat surface, ideally on soil. but can be placed on concrete as well.

When installed in public spaces like schools and community gardens, it can be used as a gathering space to bring people together.

We want to thank the Awesome Ottawa awards to help us kickstart this idea in 2022. Over the years, we've kept improving the bench design and testing it in gardens, and yes, wormies do survive the Ottawa winter in the bench.

How it works - ⁣You create an ecosystem for the composting earthworms by adding leaves, grass clippings, woodchips, paper napkins, and feed that ecosystem your kitchen scraps. Simply lift the lid, empty out the food scraps, spread it evenly on the surface, and let the wormies eat it all in about a month. In the winter, the worm farm will remain dormant as the worms go into a state of hibernation.

The worm bench is separated into two chambers divided by a vertical mesh in the middle - this design allows for easy harvesting of castings as worms will move to the side where there is fresh food, and worm castings can be removed from the other side, mostly free of worms.

We have two versions of the bench - a standalone worm farm and one with integrated planters on either side. The standalone worm farm provides 6 feet of composting space while the planter version has 4 feet of composting space and 1 foot of growing space on either side.

The price includes delivery, worms, and set up. We are currently only selling in Ottawa and surrounding areas.

As part of our commitment to education, Schools will receive the Bench Of Life at a discounted price of $1200.
